Iguana Update #6

Update #6:

I've started the scales on the face and have figured out how to do the very fine lines that separate each scale. I'm Using hair-thin lines of clay approx. 1/8th inch long. The clay is almost whispy at the very tip of the piece I'm 'snake-rolling'. A very light touch is needed or the end will break off. That's why I'm using such tiny 'whisps'. And to give the separation lines a faint look, I gently tap the 'whisp' where I want it to lay and then carefully using the spade tool, I tap it and mix it a little with the surrounding clay. Then smooth the line out again where I need it to be. This technique is working really well and you can see the results in the very front of the face. I am very happy and satisfied with it so far... it is extremely time-consuming... but definitely worth it! :)

5 More Art Cards!! :)

I'm tired!! I was supposed to get ten finished over the last two days but I could only manage 5... the others will have to wait till next 'Clay Play Day' :) I absolutely love the 'Giraffe' and the 'Great Hornbill' comes in second :) I have a new idea for some wire art... I have a TON of recycled gold keys... I'm going to turn them into pendant bases and hopefully do insects, flowers, a few animals, etc... I'll probably play around with it tomorrow after I spend some time with my 'little books'! :)))

'Great Hornbill'
'Two Herons'
'Giraffe Repose'
'Den Mother'
'Cormorant' (Can you see the Cormorant? He's swimming :)

About Abstract Art Cards:

Made from 100% Polymer Clays. I mix various colors together than flatten it by running it through a pasta machine. I then cut out pieces the size of an art card; 2.5x3.5 inches. Just as you would search for images in the clouds, I search for images in the clay. I turn it in all directions until that very special 'something' appears. I then bring it out with various sculpting tools and a lot of imagination! When I am through sculpting the design, it gets a final trim and is then baked and coated with a thin layer of liquid medium 'Polyclay'. They look fabulous framed or displayed on a tiny easel :)

Iguana Update #5

I've begun more color layering on the face and added foundational spots at the back of the head. I've noticed to my frustration that this piece is giving me the same trouble as the Dolphin. The clays on the front of the face are sliding around because of the super soft layers of Sculpey upon Sculpey. However! I have found a solution to the problem that seems to be working out great. By applying the same technique as 'Clouding', I've been able to carefully mix the colors with the small ball stylus and then smooth them out with the spade tool or the large ball stylus. It's producing a very mottled look which works perfectly for this subject.

I've also begun the very tedious task of detailing the individual scales. The defining lines around each scale is really difficult but so far they are coming out good. I have begun to work on the mouth and you can see several completed areas on the top lip. That's all I'm doing for this weekend. Now that I see the finished product of the lip scales and have solved the slippery clay problem, I'm very satisfied with it so far, and having set days to work on it is keeping me focused and in forward momentum! :)
